Profile

I have been teaching both undergraduate and postgraduates students in higher education since I qualified nearly 20 years ago. I got the teaching bug from the first day I had my own group on clinic, and although I have worked in many fields within dentistry I have always been drawn back into teaching. I feel that as a dentist you change one person’s mouth with the skills you have, however as a teacher I train the next generation, become a role model, and have a bigger impact on my students. This has demonstrated my commitment to undergraduate studies and development of the clinicians of the future.

I have substantial experience with both teaching and representing the interests of students. I have worked through all levels of Student Support, starting as a Personal Tutor and becoming Senior Tutor (Student Support and Pastoral Care) to being the Academic Lead and Head of Student Support. I have been responsible for the pastoral support and wellbeing for over 500 students, I am also responsible for managing and advising nearly 40 Personal Tutors within the institute, ensure their training needs are met, managing difficult situations and mediating between students. These skills are essential for managing students and staff, and have allowed me to develop negotiating skills and the ability to draw on different strategies, to reduce conflict and manage a cohort of students and staff. Which is paramount for this position.

My career has progressed from being a junior lecturer, module and course convenor, senior internal examiner, I sat on the internal review panel, curriculum review panel, curriculum design group, and GDC review for both the BDS and Hygiene and Therapy Course. I feel that this has given me a unique insight into the running and development of the undergraduate courses. I have had significant exposure to the management not only of my own department but also more widely throughout the development and implementation of our new curriculum. I have a full understanding of the curriculum and how the themes build and how this directly blue prints back to the GDC learning outcomes. Now I lead both our BDS and BSc programmes ensuring they are managed effectively at our base campus in Whitechapel and across all of our outreach sites.
