Professor of Restorative Dentistry
Richard Ibbetson graduated from Guy’s Hospital Dental School, University of London in 1974 and completed an MSc in Conservative Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Institute in 1979. He then spent 20 years on the staff of the Institute and later was Head of the Department of Conservative Dentistry. In 1995, he established and developed a new Department of Continuing Education at the Eastman. In 1999, he was appointed to the Chair of Primary Dental Care at the University of Edinburgh and became Director of the new Edinburgh Postgraduate Dental Institute with a particular remit to develop postgraduate dental education and education for the dental team. In September 2011, he moved back to London with his appointment as Professor of Restorative Dentistry at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry.
He is currently the Dean of the Dental Faculty of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He holds an Honorary Professorship in the College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He is also a past President of The British Society for Restorative Dentistry.
His clinical expertise is in Restorative Dentistry with a particular interest in Fixed Prosthodontics and Conservative Dentistry. He is an experienced teacher of postgraduate dentists and taught clinical Masters Programmes. He has lectured extensively to professional groups both at home and overseas.

Research interests:
These are directed towards two areas. The first is the mechanical aspects of fixed prosthodontics where he works collaboratively with Professor Bob Reuben of Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. Current work is examining the potential of acoustic emission to measure the degree of integration of dental implants, the causes of failure of veneering ceramic used with zirconia crowns and the compliance of the periodontal ligament as a predictor of tooth movement. The second area of research has been examining the developing role of the Dental Care Professionals and in particular analyses of the current workforce.
He also has a further academic focus in educational development having led the establishment of five new Masters Degrees, an Honours BSc in Oral Health Sciences and a number of DCP training programmes during his time at the University of Edinburgh. In 2011, he led a team which successfully bid for funding of £250K from the University of Edinburgh to establish a new on-line Master of Science Degree in Primary Dental Care.
