Research interests:

His research career has focussed on psycho-social risk factors for oral diseases. A current interest is on stress as a risk factor for periodontal disease, the role of tobacco use in oral diseases and the potential role of the dental workforce in tobacco cessation and the development of alternative models of service delivery for underserved populations. This latter interest stems from his role as Manager of a Tobacco Cessation programme for the Bangladeshi community of East London . ( www.btcp.globalink.org )

Tobacco use in East London, whether smoked by men or chewed by women, far exceeds the current UK national average. He is concerned to develop collaborative activity and evidence based public policy to combat all types of tobacco use.

Recent studies have used salivary cotinine to validate tobacco chewing prevalence in Bangladeshi women and the outcomes of a tobacco cessation programme. This methodology has also been used to measure the impact on non-smoking restaurant staff of working in restaurants with different levels of smokefree environments. Other studies have reviewed East London's retail trade in South Asian tobacco products, the correlates of oral pain reported by Bangladeshi women who have stopped chewing tobacco and the prevalence of dual (smoked and chewed) tobacco use in Bangladeshi men. A current collaboration with Cancer Research UK involves the development and evaluation of leaflet and poster materials on preventing oral cancer.

A recent collaborative bid with colleagues from QMUL has resulted in the award, funded through the National Prevention Research Initiative, to investigate diabetes onset in the Bangladeshi community.

As a teacher he provides academic leadership and line management for the design and development of Dental Public Health teaching (both undergraduate and postgraduate), to ensure that it meets the requirements of external validation bodies such as the General Dental Council. He also manages the Selected Study Module undergraduate programme (including liaison with the Senior Tutor for Elective Visits) and Practice Placement Scheme. His educational management activity includes acting as Deputy Chair of Examiners for BDS Part 2 and as Senior Tutor for Dental Postgraduate Taught Programmes. This role involves fostering inter-disciplinary activity by chairing the Masters Course Organisers Group and through the organization of the Institute's Induction Programme and Core Course.
