Biography

Elizabeth Davenport qualified in dentistry from the Royal Dental Hospital School of Dental Surgery, University of London (1974).  Her career has been devoted to the furtherance of paediatric dentistry as an educator and clinical specialist. Her research interests are centered on oral epidemiology culminating in 1993 in her PhD on Caries Risk in Children and attending the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine to complete an MSc in Medical Epidemiology, one of the few dentists worldwide to have done so and recently dental education. As a researcher and clinician she is acutely aware of the need to be professional in her every day practice. She is member and past chair of the International Association for Dental Research Ethics (2005-2007)committee who are in the process of reviewing the associations Code of Ethics.

Elizabeth is passionate about paediatric dentistry and works tirelessly at all levels to promote the specialty. However, her interests are directed more to education, especially in developing a Progress File for the dental team. Since 1998 she has achieved £300K funding, published and won prizes for work completed. Currently she and a number of others are working on the development of a generic electronic Progress File for the Dental Continuum.

In 2003 she was awarded a personal chair in Dental Education, the first in the United Kingdom, in recognition of her contribution to dental education at the local, national and international level and as part of Queen Mary, University of London (QMUL)’s recognition of excellence in teaching. Her most recent achievement is receiving a National Teaching Fellowship in 2006.

Elizabeth believes she has a mission to develop and deliver dental education fit for the 21st century and is active at all levels at QMUL in matters associated with learning, teaching and assessment. She assists dental colleagues throughout the world in their development of curricula and assessment. She was appointed Examinations Convenor at the Dental Faculty, Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh in October 2006, a member of the GDC’s IQE (International Qualifying Examination) Review Group, IQE implementation Group. She published two books in 2006 designed to assist the dental team in their understanding of competencies and evidence based dentistry: Key competencies for integrated dental care; edited by Mossey, Holsgrove, Stirrups and Davenport OUP 2006, and Evidence-Based Dentistry: An Introduction. Hackshaw, Paul, Davenport. Blackwell Munksgaard 2006. She was appointed chair of the overseas Registration Examination Board in November 2007.
