Vanessa Muirhead is a NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer and Specialty Registrar in Dental Public Health. She has been involved in postdoctoral research at the Institute of Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) since January 2010. She is a qualified dentist who gained a first class BSc honours degree in Experimental Pathology and a Bachelor degree in Dental Surgery (BDS) at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, QMUL. After working as a community dentist for Portsmouth and Wandsworth PCTs, she returned to QMUL to complete a Master's degree with Distinction in Dental Public Health in 2002. Vanessa moved to Canada in 2003 to pursue a doctorate at the University of Toronto and postdoctoral research at McGill University in Montreal, supported by competitive national fellowships.
Vanessa's research has primarily explored novel psychosocial factors in oral health including family functioning, working poverty, school performance and food security. Her diverse research experience includes survey methods; quantitative research, qualitative and mixed methods research; oral health needs assessment and health services research. Vanessa also has experience in grant writing and business case development.
