Dr Nikos Mardas, Dipl DS, MS, PhD

Dr Nikos Mardas qualified in Dentistry from Athens University in 1992; He completed his 3-year specialist training and MS degree in Periodontology in 1997 at the Royal Dental College, University of Aarhus, Denmark. He was awarded a PhD degree in 2005 from the same University.
During the period 2005-2015 he was a Senior Lecturer / Honorary Specialist and M.Clin.Dent program co-ordinator in Periodontology Unit, at UCL, Eastman Dental Institute. In July 2015, he was appointed Senior Clinical Lecturer & Honorary Consultant in the Centre for Adult Oral Health, Barts & The London School of Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London. Dr Mardas is also consultant Periodontist and implant surgeon in private practice.
He has published several papers in national and international peer-reviewed journals in the field of periodontal, bone regeneration and implant dentistry and he is editorial board member in Clinical oral Implant Research and regular reviewer for many international and national journals. He has participated as a reviewer in consensus meetings of EAO, EFP and EADE and has extensively lectured nationally and internationally. In 2011 he was awarded the Basic Research Prize, of the European Association for Osseointegration. In March 2015 was appointed Education Delegate for the UK & Ireland ITI section.
Dr. Mardas has more than 18 years of private practice and university / hospital based clinical experience in treatment of periodontal diseases including conventional and regenerative periodontal surgery, periodontal plastic surgery, alveolar bone augmentation procedures and dental implants alone or in combination with bone grafting procedures.
His main research interests are in the area of periodontal, bone and gingival tissue regeneration and wound healing, utilising various biomaterials. He has also a special interest on the outcome of the above mentioned treatment principles in specific systemic conditions like osteoporosis. In the last 10 years, he has been actively involved in several research projects, including in vitro biomaterial testing and development, preclinical - animal experimental projects and randomised clinical trials, evaluating the effectiveness of new regenerative materials for bone and periodontal regeneration, as well as dental implant related treatment protocols.
His current and future research is focusing on:
• The evaluation of current bone and periodontal tissue regeneration and implant protocols in healthy or compromised healing conditions by means of preclinical and clinical studies.
• The development of tissue regeneration protocols based on the combination of novel biomaterials / scaffolds for growth factor, cell or chemotherapeutics delivery
• The evaluation of different types of periodontal surgery in terms of clinical, microbiological and patient based outcome
• The creation of a sound scientific link between in-vitro studies, pre-clinical animal experiments and initial clinical trials for the treatment of peri-implantitis
• The systematic evaluation and analysis of the literature in the field of periodontal and bone regeneration and implant outcomes
