Clinical Lecturer in Oral Medicine
Anwar R Tappuni is Clinical Senior Lecturer and Academic Lead for Oral Medicine at the Institute of Dentistry, Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London. She is a subject tutor to the dental undergraduate and postgraduate students. She is an active researcher with a special interest in dry mouth and the impact of HIV on oral health. Anwar is a member of the examination board for Diploma in Special Care Dentistry at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. She is currently serving on the Central Committee for Dental Academics. In 2008 she was awarded the BDA Roll of Distinction for outstanding service to UK dentistry.

Research activity in the past 5 years include
• Clinical trial for the evaluation of two dry mouth sprays in Sjogren’s syndrome population
• Assessment of in situ micro-endoscopy as a real-time imaging technique for examining & diagnosing of skin and oral vascular lesions
• Serum and salivary levels of keratinocyte growth factor in recurrent aphthous stomatitis
• The development and the application of ulcer severity score system for recurrent aphthous stomatitis
• A novel technique for the assessment of the morphological changes in chronic swelling of the lips in patients with oro-facial granulomatosis
• Expression of Candida albicans secreted aspartyl proteinases during human mucosal infections
• Serum and Salivary IgA antibody responses to 200Kda surface glycoprotien from Saccharomyces cerevisiae in orofacial granulomatosis
• Applications of immunofluorescence in the diagnosis and the investigation of immunobullous disease
