Development of a self-disinfecting alginate dental impression material

Associated Centre/s:  Clinical and Diagnostic Oral Sciences

Associated Research:  Infection, Immunity and Inflammation

Research Programme Funder: EPSRC

This study seeks to address the potential infection risk to dental technicians posed by contaminated dental impression materials between impression taking and subsequent processing in the dental laboratory. This EPSRC funded project aims to develop a relatively cheap and straightforward to use self-disinfecting alginate impression material with bactericidal and virucidal properties. Modulation of formulation pH and release of antimicrobial compounds are strategies being explored.
