This research group explores new glass/glass-ceramic compositions and methods of processing them to produce unique microstructures. The researchers active in this group comprise: Dr Michael Cattell, Dr Natalia Karpukhina, Professor Robert Hill and Dr Rory Wison.
Synthesis of novel glasses
This group has led research into the synthesis of novel glasses and the nucleation and controlled crystal growth of new leucite and diopside glass-ceramics demonstrating the ability to predict and control their properties. Work led a high Strength/low Wear leucite glass- ceramic for the Dental Industry “Lumineers®”. Leucite glass-ceramic material (Lumineers®) was awarded top cosmetic product by the Dental Advisor (2009). Rated excellent by the Clinical Research Associates who evaluate products for the dental profession.

The group are currently focused on three main areas:
- Synthesis of Novel glasses and high strength glass-ceramics.
- Diopside glass-ceramics for YTZP ceramics.
Processing of glass-ceramics using Spark Plasma Sintering and Heat extrusion to create unique microstructures.
