The Institute of Dentistry is part of Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), a leading research-led university offering a first-class education to students from around the world. At the forefront in the advancement of dental care, the Institute of Dentistry shares the vision of Queen Mary that learning takes place in a research environment that enriches the teaching process.

The Institute of Dentistry combines a strong tradition of clinical, epidemiological and public health research in dentistry with a solid basic science research base. The diversity and consistent strength of research attracts major funding and supports an environment that feeds into collaborative academic and industrial links. In the REF 2014 Exercise, the Institute was ranked the top Dental School in the UK for the quality of its research, based on Grade Point Average. In the QS World University Rankings 2020, The Institute of Dentistry was ranked 1st in the world for dentistry research citations, and 14th in the world overall for dentistry.

Building on and contributing to research excellence across the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, and the whole of Queen Mary, the IoD strongly promotes the translation of its research to address global oral health problems while fostering clinical innovation and excellence. Our research strategy focuses on improving the diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases through a fundamental understanding of the cellular, molecular and societal basis underpinned by effective approaches to disease prevention, health promotion and strengthening of global health systems.  

The Institute is split into the following research centres - Oral Immunobiology and Regenerative Medicine, Oral Bioengineering, Dental Public Health and Primary Care, and Oral Clinical Research. More information can be found on the relevant pages below.
