Profile

I am a proactive dental therapist and divide my time between teaching dental hygiene and dental therapy students within the Institute of Dentistry, and working in General Dental Practice in Essex. I joined the team at Queen Mary in 2005, and am currently the module lead for paediatric dentistry within the Diploma in Dental Hygiene & Therapy course and a joint year 2 lead for the BSc in Oral Health. I teach dental hygiene and therapy students and dental undergraduate students. In addition to paediatric dentistry, I lead the reflective practice element of the BSc.

I qualified from New Cross School for Dental Therapists with merit in 1983 (distinction grades did not exist then!) in the last cohort of students before the programme transferred to the London Hospital Medical College (now Queen Mary, University of London). In 2010 I was short-listed for the DDU DCP Teacher of the Year Award, and in 2020 nominated for the QMUL Assessment & Feedback Champion award. In 2015 I attained my Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, and more recently a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Education with distinction. In the past I have worked as a dental therapist in the Community Dental Service (CDS), led a CDS oral health promotion team, worked in public health on maternal and infant health issues and been secretary to the National Oral Health Promotion Group. I spent 11 years as a primary school governor with particular responsibility for child protection and safeguarding.

Teaching

I lead on teaching paediatric dentistry to the Diploma and BSc dental hygiene and therapy students, as well as the reflective practice element of the BSc. In addition, I am involved in communication skills teaching for BDS and BSc students.

I provide clinical teaching with simulated patients as well as clinical supervision to students on patient clinics.
