Profile

Valeria Marinho joined the Centre for Adult Oral Health at QMUL in April 2005. Previously she has worked at the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health (University College London) as a lecturer, and for both the Cochrane Neuromuscular Disease at Guy's, King's and St Thomas' School of Medicine (King's College London) and the Oral Health Specialist Library (National Library for Health – NHS), following a training fellowship and Diploma in Systematic Reviews Methodology at the Institute of Child Health (UCL) in 1998. She obtained her MSc in Dental Public Health in 1993, and her PhD in 2003, both also from University College London. As part of her PhD, she has conducted and published a series of Cochrane systematic reviews on topical fluorides for caries prevention, of impact on national and international level.

Valeria is a senior lecturer at the Centre for Clinical and Diagnostic Oral Sciences (CDOS) at QMUL, an editor of the Cochrane Oral Health Group, and chair of the selection panel committee for The Cochrane Collaboration Aubrey Sheiham Public Health and Primary Care Scholarship. She is also an editorial board member for BMC Oral Health, acts as a commentator for the Evidence-Based Dentistry Journal and as a peer reviewer for Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology and various other Journals.

Valeria lectures both nationally and internationally on systematic reviews, evidence-based effectiveness of fluorides and evidence-based practice, and she teaches postgraduate and undergraduate students in these areas.

Research

Research Interests:

Valeria is the lead review author of a series of Cochrane systematic reviews on topical fluorides for caries prevention, of impact on national and international level. In this area, she is also involved in the production and publication of new systematic reviews in a collaborative work with the Cochrane Oral Heath Group. The research, published since 2002, is high quality scientific evidence to support EBD clinical guidelines and public health practice and policy on the appropriate use of fluorides, and has prompted important methodological advances in the field of systematic reviews methodology.

Valeria's main research interests are in evidence synthesis, systematic reviews methodology, information retrieval and critical appraisal of research, with particular applications in dental health, public health, and evidence based health care. In these areas, she has published several peer reviewed articles and book chapters, and, with postgraduate students in the Centre, she is responsible for supervising several projects.
