Research Assessment Exercise 2008

The results of the 2008 RAE have demonstrated that the Dental School at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry is one of the best in the country.

The Warden, Professor Sir Nicolas Wright in a message to the SMD thanked all staff in the School of Medicine and Dentistry “..for their marvellous efforts which have propelled SMD into the top tier of research active medical schools… as announced
yesterday in the RAE results and reported in today's press”
He singled out the Institute of Dentistry saying “Dentistry, in UoA10 had a brilliant result. Based on quantity of 3* and 4* outputs, we were first equal with Manchester, and when this was converted to rankings we were 2nd out of 14 UK dental schools.

The Dean for Dentistry, Professor Farida Fortune, was delighted with the outcome for Queen Mary, The School of Medicine and Dentistry and in particular Dentistry, confirming that the Dental School was Friendly, First class and Focused. More>>

Times Higher Education Awards nomination for Dental Institute

Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry Academic Dental Clinic has been nominated for ‘Outstanding Contribution to the Community.’ Since opening in January 2008 the Clinic has been able to offer in excess of 10,000 patient appointments – many to people who had gone without dental treatment for a number of years, such was the scarcity of local clinical provision.

Prof Wagner Marcenes

Prof Wagner Marcenes of the Institute of Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London is this year’s winner of the IADR/AADR William J. Gies Award for Clinical Research along with Dr Sanders, Professor Slade, Dr Turrell, and Professor Spencer for their paper titled “Does Psychological Stress Mediate Social Deprivation in Tooth Loss?” [J Dent Res 86: 1166-1170, December, 2007]. This prestigious award is given for the best paper published in the Journal of Dental Research during the preceding year. Prof Marcenes is the leader of the Patient and Population Research Group. Dr Xiaohui Chen and Dr Mike Cattell

A high strength and low wear leucite glass-ceramic developed by Dr Xiaohui Chen and Dr Mike Cattell with industry has been launched as a Dental product (Lumineers® 2). This new material has been used to manufacture in excess of 14000 all ceramic Dental restorations for patients to date, with excellent results. This innovative material can be used in conjunction with advanced CAD-CAM, heat extrusion and sintering techniques to manufacture aesthetic and durable Dental restorations with favourable strength and wear properties.

Dr Anwar Tappuni

Dr Anwar R Tappuni, a member of the Institute of Dentistry, was entered on the BDA Roll of Distinction for outstanding service to UK dentistry. She was awarded this honour for her work with refugee dentists. Since 2002, Dr Tappuni has been instrumental in mentoring and running a study group for refugee dentists to aid them in overcoming barriers to joining the UK professional workforce.

Dr Tappuni, specialist in oral medicine, has been a dedicated academic since 1998. She is an active researcher with an international standing and is a member of the International Scientific Committee for world workshop on Oral Health and Disease in AIDS.

Kieran McLaughlin

The British Orthodontic Society has conferred upon Kieran McLaughlin the Orthodontic Technician Award for Distinguished Service for 2009.

Kieran qualified in 1977 and received his advanced certificate in 1980. In 1994 he became the first Orthodontic Technician to gain an MSc, graduating from the QUeen Mary University of London Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. Since 1995 he has worked with Dr Ama Johal and Dr Joanna Battagel to design appliances for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea and has also worked with Dr Neville Bass to develop the Dynamax appliance.

David Bearn, Chair of the SCholarships and Grants Committee of the BOS commented "The Committee conferred the 2009 Award on Kieran McLaughlin in recognition of the huge and on-going contribution he has made to the Profession and we salute his achievements over an incredible thirty years of service".

Professor DYD Samarawickrama

Professor Samarawickrama, Professor of Conservative Dentistry and Senior Tutor (Dentistry) is the recipient of the DDU Dentist Teacher of the Year Award 2008. He was selected after a three-stage selection process and a presentation before a panel of judges and an invited audience. All the schools in the UK and Ireland took part in the process.

In his acceptance speech, Professor Samarawickrama dedicated the Award to his students, his colleagues and the School.

Dr Stephen Pitt

Dr Stephen Pitt, one of the tutors at the Academic Dental Clinic in Southend, has recently been the recipient of two awards. Having already received the title of ‘Best New Company’ in the 2008 Colchester Business Awards for his practice The Dental Studio in Braiswick, Essex, earlier this month Stephen was honoured as ‘Best Young Dentist in the East of England’ by Dentistry magazine. Stephen, who is a 1999 Barts and The London dental graduate, combines his busy practice with two days a week teaching at the Academic Dental Clinic, which he has been involved with since it opened in January this year. Prior to his move to Southend, Stephen had taught Conservative Dentistry at Whitechapel since 2005.
