Kseniya Shuturminska Wins Dental Institute Image Competition
16 June 2015
Kseniya Shuturminska, from the Dental Physical Sciences Unit, Institute of Dentistry, has won the first prize in Monday’s image competition as part of the QMUL GradFest. Kseniya won the prize for her image “Rose” which was taken using the scanning electron microscope.
Kseniya's image is a coloured image of an apatite mineral grown on a glass slide in the presence of proteins. One of the proteins she used caused the mineral to grow in different directions, forming rose structures.
Kseniya's project is looking at making self-assembled systems out of organic material that can grow enamel-like mineral (apatite). These systems could then be used to remineralise tooth decay.
