22 January 2015

The Dental Institute and Women's Health received a Barts Charity Large Grant to explore gums health in pregnancy and the link with preterm birth.

Barts Charity supports innovative approaches in healthcare and medical research that are able to make a difference in the patient care in the local population.

Dr Cecilia Gonzales-Marin (Centre for Adult Oral Health) in conjunction with lead members of the Institute of Dentistry and the Women Health Department will be managing the project. The multi-disciplinary team include participation from Prof. Wagner Marcenes and Prof. Robert Allaker (CDOS), Dr David Gillam and Dr Wendy Turner (AOH), Prof William Wade (Centre for Immunology and Infectious Diseases), Prof Khalid Khan and Prof Stephanie Taylor (Centre for Primary Care and Public Health).

This is a case-control study aiming to explore a number of factors including oral/periodontal health conditions in women who delivered a preterm and term infant in the East London hospitals. Participants will be recruited from the Royal London Hospital, Whipps Cross, Newham and Homerton hospitals. The study will start in 2015 and will run for 1 year.

Congratulations to the PRAM’OH study team for a successful application.
