Dr Mangala Patel

SAT Chair/ Reader in Biomaterials in Relation to Dentistry and Senior Tutor

Mangala Patel is a Dental Materials/Biomaterials Scientist with more than 20 years’ experience in research and teaching. She has successfully supervised several PhD students. A major part of her activities involve the pastoral care and welfare of students.


Dr Dominiki Chatzopoulou      

Senior Clinical Lecturer, Specialist Periodontist and special Interest in Implants. Course Director for the DClinDent in Periodontology

Dr Dominiki Chatzopoulou is a Specialist Periodontist and Senior Clinical Lecturer in academia.

Dominiki is engaged in the management of complex periodontal problems including Surgical Periodontal Regeneration, Mucogingival Surgery and Implant Dentistry. She is the postgraduate director for specialty training in Periodontics along with 15 years of a mainly teaching focused academic career with multi- and cross- disciplinary teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. In her role as Postgraduate Course Director in Periodontology, she takes the lead in postgraduate teaching and training along with day-to-day management of the programme. She has been responsible for the delivery of its strategy, direction, curriculum development and assessment. She also maintains an increasing international profile in collaboration with other universities, industry parties and consultancy having given national and international lectures and workshops in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry, especially in Middle East and Europe.

She is involved in research as well as postgraduate and undergraduate education, lecturing and supervising clinicians dealing with periodontal problems and aesthetic dentistry. She is a Member of the Monospecialty (Periodontology) Training Committee and review panel for pan London specialists in training along with External Examiner for Overseas Registration Examination and the Licentiate in Dental Surgery (LDS), Core Group member, Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Dominiki has many years of experience of working both at a hospital and private practice settings and works closely with many other specialists, helping to maintain a multidisciplinary approach to patients care. Along with her academic career and various national and international professional activities such as audits, appraisals and job planning, her current clinical time is engaged solely in the management and treatment of simple complex and advanced periodontal cases what are essential to high quality patient care. Her latest achievement is the International Team for Implantology (ITI) Fellowship which is a reflection of her experience and contribution in advanced bone and soft tissue augmentation and Implantology.

Dr Alan Cruchley

Senior Lecturer & Director of Taught Programmes

 Dr Cruchley is a non- clinical oral pathologist with over 30 years’ experience in teaching and research.  He has been involved in the oversight of postgraduate and undergraduate courses within the Dental school.


Prof Ferranti Wong

Interim IoD Director/ Dean, Professor of Paediatric Dentistry

Ferranti has been working in the Dental Institute for over 30 years. He first joined the school in 1986 as a postgraduate student, and was trained and developed into the present position. His previous roles include chair of the Dental Postgraduate Committee and Head of Centre for Oral Growth and Development.



Juliet Ellwood

SAT Secretary/Dean’s PA (IoD)

Juliet originally studied Anthropology and History but has spent most of her subsequent career in HE administration. She has been at QMUL for 6 years and moved across from the Blizard to Dentistry in 2013 along with the Institute’s senior leadership team.


Dr. Paul Ryan

Academic Clinical Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry

Paul Ryan is an Academic Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Specialist Registrar in Restorative Dentistry.  He is also a Specialist in Periodontology and is involved in clinical teaching and immunology research alongside completing his further Specialist training in Restorative dentistry.


Jo Kirner

Institute Manager (IoD)

Jo Kirner has worked in Higher Education in various professional roles for the past 15 years; she took up post as General Manager for the Dental School in November 2013, having previously managed the Blizard Institute, also within the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.  Jo recently completed her MBA in Higher Education Management.

Dr Cecilia Gonzales-Marin

Clinical Lecturer in Periodontology

Cecilia joined QMUL as a FT Clinical Lecturer in 2012 after completing a PhD in Oral Microbiology and Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes under the supervision of Prof Rob Allaker and Prof Dave Spratt (UCL) at QMUL (2007-2011). She studied dentistry in Peru and obtained specialist training in Periodontology (2006). She is now teaching the course of Periodontology for the Undergraduate curriculum as well as running seminars in Basic Science topics for the DClinDent in Periodontology programme. She also organises and delivers other clinical related courses. Her research interest in Pregnancy evolved since her PhD and she is now working in collaboration with the Women Health Research Unit (QMUL) running clinical research and working to improve oral health in women in the local community of East London (funded by Barts Charity). Her work has allowed a number of undergrad and postgrad students to become involved in research (funded by the Annual Fund, QMUL Alumni). She is also engaged in basic science research, which she has developed with international collaboration primarily with the Forsyth Institute in the United States receiving funding from prestigious institutions such as the Royal Society.

Cecilia was a recipient of the UNESCO-L’Oreal Fellowship for Women in Science in 2009-2011 and as a representative women form the Latin-American community she is committed to support the Institute to align to the Athena Swan ethos and principles.



Dr Nikolaos Gkranias

Dental Therapy Tutor

Dr Nikolaos Gkranias qualified in Dentistry from Athens University. In 2003, following his military service as a dentist in the Greek Army, he was accepted as a postgraduate at UCL Eastman Dental Institute’s 3 year MClinDent Course in Periodontology. He graduated in 2006 and he was awarded with “Distinction” a MClinDent in Periodontology as well as a European Federation in Periodontology (EFP) Certificate in Periodontology.  In 2014 he was awarded a PhD in Clinical Periodontology under the theme of “Associations of Periodontitis and Diabetes Mellitus”.

During the period 2009-2016 he was a Clinical Lecturer and Speciality Dentist in Periodontology Unit, at UCL Eastman Dental Institute and Eastman Dental Hospital. In June 2016, he was appointed Senior Clinical Lecturer & Honorary Consultant in Periodontology in the newly found Centre for Oral Clinical Research (COCR), Barts & The London School of Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London.



Dr Sharan Sidhu

Clinical Senior Lecturer/Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry and Staff Adviser, WISE@QMUL

Sharan Sidhu's clinical specialties are in Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics. She has extensive clinical academic experience and also has an international research profile in adhesive dental materials.


Lorraine Low

Consultant Orthodontist, Barts Health NHS Trust & Clinical Lecturer in Orthodontics, QMUL

Lorraine Low has worked at QMUL from 2009 to 2015 as the Administrator for the Masters in Clinical Dentistry courses for Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics then in 2015 took up her current post as Senior Quality Administrator & Curriculum Support (Clinical Years)


Dr Vanessa Muirhead

Clinical Senior Lecturer/Honorary Consultant in Dental Public Health

Dr Vanessa Muirhead has worked at the dental school since 2010 as a postdoctoral researcher, Clinical Lecturer and Clinical Senior Lecturer. She now leads the MSc in Dental Public Health course and the undergraduate Population Health and Evidence Based Dentistry theme at the dental school.




Dr Vanessa Sousa Moreno

Academic Clinical Lecturer/Specialty Registrar in Periodontology

Vanessa is currently an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer and Specialty Registrar in Periodontology at the Centre for Oral Clinical Research (COCR), Barts & The London School of Medicine & Dentistry (SMD)/Barts Health NHS Trust, Queen Mary, University of London (QMUL). She combines theoretical, in vitro, preclinical and clinical research concepts to develop and translate innovative science into patient care. Furthermore, she takes part in teaching and PPI/PE activities at Barts and The London SMD, and is a member of the Blizard Institute and the Life Science Initiative Microbiome Network at QMUL. Vanessa cares a lot about diversity and equality in sciences and society.




Dr Maisoon Al-Jawad

Senior Lecturer in Dental Physical Sciences

Maisoon Al-Jawad is a scientist with expertise in the structure and formation of hard tissues. She is involved in developing novel techniques for studying the structure of enamel, dentine and bone and for growing synthetic biomimetic materials. She has successfully supervised and mentored several PhD students and postdocs.

Ben Audsley

Electronic Resources Manager

Ben has worked in eLearning for over 8 years, and in IT and computing for over 15 years.

He began my career at the Workers Education Association, the largest provider of Adult education in the UK, as a support analyst before moving up to a Senior Support Analyst, involved in building networks and providing helpdesk support.  Ben then moved on to work as a Learning Technologies officer for Coventry University London Campus, and then a Virtual Learning Environment Manager during his 4 years at the Royal Veterinary College.

Ben has managed multiple eLearning projects throughout his wide and varied career, including a college wide migration from Blackboard to Moodle, creating new undergraduate online courses, managing Virtual Learning Environments, Creating e-learning content, Moodle training, learning design including MOOCs and SPOCs and pedagogical design of online courses.

Ben frequently identifies and assesses relevant learning technologies to extend and support teaching and learning, and plan and manage the integration of such technologies into the curriculum and into teaching practice.

Alessia D’Onofrio

Research Assistant/ PG Student

Alessia D’Onofrio is a second year PhD student and an MRC funded Research Assistant in the Institute of Dentistry. Her research area is on the development and pre-clinical characterization of novel bone substitutes materials for oral surgery and orthopaedic applications.


Emma James

PG Student

Emma James is a third year PhD student in the Institute of Dentistry, based in the Blizard Institute. Emma researches how metabolism changes in senescent cells (cells that can no longer divide due to age or severe damage), and the mechanisms behind these changes.
