PhD day

The Institute of Dentistry held its 5th annual PhD Day on Monday 3rd October 2011. This year’s PhD Day was a particularly special event as it tied in with the The London Hospital Dental School centenary celebrations.

PhD Day is a big event where research students present their work to other members of Queen Mary University and a great opportunity to view the original research currently taking place at the Institute of Dentistry. Over the past five years, audiences have enjoyed the intellectual stimulation and been deeply impressed by this day of lively, original talks, academic debates, and friendly atmosphere. In past years the event has been attended by around 100 people.

The Institute of Dentistry has a proud record in the delivery of internationally recognised students’ projects in oral and dental sciences.  It combines a strong tradition of clinical, epidemiological and public health research in dentistry with a solid basic science research base which brings together a range of multi-disciplinary teams with complementary skills from clinical science, cell and molecular biology, microbiology, material science and biophysics.

Currently the Institute of Dentistry has a large postgraduate community, enrolling 10-15 new students annually. In the last decade the faculty has grown to accommodate over 50 excellent students, all successfully passing the probation period and the vast majority submitting their projects within 4 years.

The Queen Mary mission is to position ourselves, across a range of measures of research performance, in the top decile of UK universities. The Institute of Dentistry shares the vision of Queen Mary that learning takes place in a research environment that enriches the teaching process. It acknowledges its location in London's East End, embracing the potential this offers for teaching and learning. We offer a friendly, focused and successful environment for postgraduate study.

The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise results saw Barts and The London join Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College and University College London in the top 5 medical and dental schools in England for quality of research. The School was ranked first in London, ahead of University College, Imperial College and King’s College. Part of this success has been achieved by recruiting suitably qualified research students, providing a high quality research environment and providing top class supervision and training, all of which has led to successful research.

PhD students are the research leaders of tomorrow, and we are extremely proud of the role they play in shaping the future of dental practice and research.

The 2011 Institute of Dentistry PhD Day promises to be even more successful than in previous years, and we would be delighted to see you there.
