Barkantine

The Barkantine Dental Outreach Clinic is a self-contained dental clinic on the 1st floor of a purpose built medical centre, which also offers GP, maternity and mental health services to the local community. It is located near to Canary Wharf in an area of high social need.

The clinic has 10 clinical chairs which are used for the teaching of undergraduate 3rd year dental students. Each year group attends for a day every 2 weeks for a morning and afternoon session, and thus on average for 20 days per academic year. There are approximately 71 students in the year group.

The clinic is supported by 3 nursing members who engage in the smooth running of the clinic and also offer chairside assistance and advice for the students. We have 2 experienced clinical tutors supervising the clinic at each session, enabling the clinic to be used to its maximum potential.

The clinic is a primary care centre and is organised such that the students attend each session not knowing what patient or treatment they will be doing. Following a pre-session “huddle” where the students discuss their patient’s treatment with the tutors, there is a 2 hour session in which the treatment is carried out. Often at Barkantine, the 3rd year students will achieve their first restorations, extractions or denture work, and as a result they value the clinical sessions. The patient list is very healthy, with patients from all socio-economic backgrounds attending.

The aim of the Barkantine Dental Outreach Clinic is to establish the sound basic principles of primary dental care and professionalism, so that the students can progress to the 4th year of their dental studies with confidence, where more complex treatments will be carried out.
