Mangala Patel is a Dental Materials/Biomaterials Scientist with more than 20 years’ experience in research and teaching. She has successfully supervised several PhD students. A major part of her activities involve the pastoral care and welfare of students.
Dr Lesley Ann Bergmeier
Senior Lecturer in Applied Mucosal Immunology
Lesley Bergmeier is a mucosal Immunologist with more than 30 years’ experience in research and teaching. She is course organiser for a popular Postgraduate course in Experimental Oral pathology and has successfully supervised many PhD students.
Dr Alan Cruchley

Prof Mike Curtis
IoD Director/Dean; Professor of Microbiology
Mike Curtis leads the Dental Institute and in addition is the Faculty’s Deputy Vice Principal for Health. He has been with the organisation in its various guises since 1985 and moved to the Dental Institute in 2013.
SAT Secretary/Dean’s PA (IoD)
Juliet originally studied Anthropology and History but has spent most of her subsequent career in HE administration. She has been at QMUL for 6 years and moved across from the Blizard to Dentistry in 2013 along with the Institute’s senior leadership team.

Robert Hill is Head of Dental Physical Sciences and is a glass scientist specialising in degradable glasses for biomedical applications.

Jo Kirner has worked in Higher Education in various professional roles for the past 15 years; she took up post as General Manager for the Dental School in November 2013, having previously managed the Blizard Institute, also within the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. Jo recently completed her MBA in Higher Education Management.

Dr Amitha Ranauta
Senior Lecturer in Adult Oral Health, Module convenor for Professionalism, Teamwork, Social responsibility
Amitha Ranauta is a general dental practitioner who after 10 years in General dental practice started an academic career in 2005; part time clinical lecturer to her current role as a senior clinical lecturer. She is about to complete her PhD and has recently been awarded a lectureship at The Royal College of Surgeons, England for her contribution to education.
Dental Therapy Tutor
Sarah Redwood is a Dental Therapy Tutor with over 30 years’ experience with 10 of these also as a tutor. She leads the teaching for paediatric dentistry.
Dr Sharan Sidhu

Sharan Sidhu's clinical specialties are in Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics. She has extensive clinical academic experience and also has an international research profile in adhesive dental materials.
Dr Thushala Ubaya
Consultant Orthodontist, Barts Health NHS Trust & Clinical Lecturer in Orthodontics, QMUL
|Dr Ubaya has a keen interest in teaching and mentorship and is actively involved in mentoring a number of postgraduates and undergraduates through their training. Outside of the Royal London Hospital and Queen Mary, she is also involved in volunteer programmes to guide teenagers and young adults in choosing careers in dentistry.|
Professor David Williams
Lead for International Partnerships
David Williams is Professor of Global Oral Health and Academic Lead for International Partnerships. David chaired the Dentistry Panel in RAE2008 and was President of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) from 2009-10, where he led on the Global Oral Health Inequalities Research Agenda initiative.
I have been at QMUL for six years now having completed my BSc in Biochemistry here, and have held numerous positions of responsibility during this time. I am currently in my third year of the BDS Dentistry programme. Being involved with Athena SWAN is something new for me. I am looking forward to my role as the Undergraduate Representative and working with the team.
Emma James is a third year PhD student in the Institute of Dentistry, based in the Blizard Institute. Emma researches how metabolism changes in senescent cells (cells that can no longer divide due to age or severe damage), and the mechanisms behind these changes.
Kaveh Memarzadeh is a post-doctoral researcher working on the effect of novel nanoparticles for enhancement of dental implant coatings. Kaveh is a keen social science communicator and has supervised numerous MSc students over the years.
