Oral Surgery

The Oral Surgery Department is situated at the Dental Institute of Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry in London's East End.

The department was one of the most active and well-known within the country for many years.  However, many changes have occurred in personnel in recent years, resulting in a slight “rocking of the boat.”  However, the department is now being re-established with the appointment of a new Senior Clinical Lecturer earlier this year and Clinical Lecturers.  Strong links are also being established with NHS colleagues, a number of whom are major contributors to the teaching and research aspects of the department.

At the present time there are 4 clinical teachers who play a vital role in the delivery of teaching to the dental students in local anaesthesia and dental extractions.  Their role is essential and the dental school is certainly fortunate to have their help and they are:

  • Dr Mohammed Haque
  • Dr Manoj Kumar
  • Dr Anand Lalli
  • Dr Andrzej Oborski

The future proposals are to further expand the number of academics within the department to aid with the teaching of undergraduates and postgraduates, and to help build the research base of the department.

The department will establish an MClinDent in Oral Surgery with the first entrants starting in September 2009.  The aim of this is to provide guidance to those interested in pursuing oral surgery to a specialised practical level but also with the added benefit of an academic thesis. We also aim to participate in training of Specialist Registrars in Oral Surgery, bringing the department into line with other major departments around the country.
